What is Labour?Childbirth (labour )is an amazing natural process by which a baby is born.During labour there are regular contractions in the womb or baby bag (uterus)which helps to slowly open up the outlet of uterus called cervix to make way for the baby to be delivered . This remarkable phenomena is coordinated with the help of the complex nervous system which supplies the uterus and cervix .Unfortunately nervefibres which carry pain sensation also run along these fibres, as labour progresses, the intensity of pain increases, resulting in severe pain during contractions .The pain is varied for each individual , but has been described by most as the most excruciating pain ever .
Why Pain relief?Though Childbirth is a very special moment in every woman’s life, its accompanying pain is not the most desired and in fact may take away the joy from this wonderful experience and has deleterious effects on both the mother and the baby.
Pain leads to increase in anxiety. This leads to excessive sweating, increased heart rate, increased rate of breathing, increase in blood pressure, flushing, muscle cramps, nausea and vomiting in the mother which in turn may lead to distress of the baby within the uterus. An anxious mother or a prolonged labour thus has adverse effects.Imagine, having a normal vaginal childbirth without pain!
Yes! It is possible. Childbirth experience can be more enjoyable if you have it without the pain
Will pain relief affect the progress of labour?Pain relief with safe methods will not affect the progress of labour. Normally the severity and intensity of contractions will progress with time whether or not you use these pain relief methods.
